A Man Who Can't Get Married

The English headline above is a direct translation of the Japanese title, and the title says it all. This is a drama in which Abe Hiroshi plays a man who can't get married. He's a handsome and successful architect who has his own office and assistants, so why can't he get married?

It's his personality that's the problem. He's selfish, has too much pride, and quickly becomes aloof when people insinuate anything he finds mildly offensive. He is also a huge connoisseur who spends time making himself professional looking meals and drinking fine wine every night in his well-kept, expensive-looking apartment. He enjoys the arts like film, and likes to rent the "making of" DVDs for movies. He also likes to listen to classical music at high volume on his expensive sound system while sitting and conducting along with the music.

His mother is constantly urging him to get married, like his sister did. But he has no interest in marriage. He just wants to be left alone so that he can sit at home and enjoy "the finer things in life".

The people who work for him at his architect agency are also annoyed by his personality. They really wish he would find a girlfriend, because they are sure that it would change his personality for the better. However, they also know that he's never going to find anyone with his personality being the way it is now.

Two women come into his life. One is the tenant of the apartment next door to him (Kuninaka Ryouko). He is annoyed by her constantly talking to her dog "Ken-chan" which he can hear through the wall, but she is equally annoyed by the volume of his classical music. They end up associating with one another when she has to call an ambulance for him. (He suddenly collapses due to an intestinal problem.) But later he has to take her to the hospital when she passes out from alcohol poisoning.

The second woman who comes into his life is a doctor at the hospital that his brother in law works at (Natsukawa Yui). She is very mature compared to him, but she is also a bit of a pathetic individual. She spends her time after work at pachinko parlors and manga kissa (places with booths to sit down and read manga, watch TV, use the Internet, etc.). She eats bentos from the convenience store every night. She also could use someone in her life.

So, I assume we are watching this drama to see what's wrong with the personality of Abe's character, and how he will change as the drama goes on. Perhaps by the end of the drama he will change from a man who can't get married, to a man who can get married and there will be a wedding.

Whatever happens, I have to say that I like this drama so far. The characters seem like they are based on very real types of people who we all know, and they can't get any romance because they have too much pride and personalities which don't allow for much change in their lives. The situation hasn't really been covered much in dramas up to this point, but we all know the situation from people in real life.

So, overall this is a good drama and Abe Hiroshi is perfect for the part. I've only seen the first few episodes, but I think this is gonna be a good one.

Hayasaka-sensei: All right. Take off your pants and underwear please.
Shinsuke: Huh?
Hayasaka-sensei: I'm going to examine your colon.
Shinsuke: Colon...
Hayasaka-sensei: Go ahead.
Shinsuke: Wait a second. It doesn't hurt anymore.
Hayasaka-sensei: It couldn't possibly get better that quickly.
Shinsuke: No, really. I'm fine now.
Hayasaka-sensei: I'm a doctor. You have nothing to be embarassed about.
Shinsuke: That's not what I meant. What are you talking about? Anyway, it's all better now...
Hayasaka-sensei: You came because you were in pain, didn't you? You were bleeding. If you go home now it will only get worse.
Shinsuke: Hey. If the patient says he's fine, then he's fine.
Hayasaka-sensei: Where are you going?
